YOU CANNOT CLONE IT, BUT YOU CAN BUY IT. Fashion, media and culture trends. Life in the metropolises and themselves – a lot is being cloned. Commercialization provides globalization. Chinese artists visualise this topic in a very fresh and provoking manner. We exhibit works by Shi Yong, Zhang Tin Jun, Tsang Kin-Wah, Liu Xiaoshu, Liu Yin Jun and Liu Fei. Chinglish – Hong Kong Art Exhibition

Chinglish – Hong Kong Art Exhibition If Cantonese is about to disappear, which one word or phrase you wish to preserve? In Hong Kong, we speak mixing Chinese and English. Chinglish, so to speak, is perhaps the collective memory of Hong Kong language. Language of a place, like its arts and culture, is an organic entity that the people of a place share. It belongs to the people’s daily life and not to the museum. Owing to its colonial history, Hong Kong is a place of mixed identities where people were caught between “the East” and “the West”. In the post-colonial global era, we are once again lost in the global village. Indigenous culture, material and immaterial, is disappearing so quickly that one day, when we realized they could be found no more but in the museum, that will be time for another confession of pain… “Chinglish” is an exhibition conceived based on a museum collection, Puk Yuk-chun’s “English in Chinese”, an interesting work of Chinese slang, words that reflect the uniqueness of Hong Kong language and culture. Also exhibiting are Luke Ching, Hung Keung, Rosanna Li, Tsang Kin-wah and Wong Chun-yu whose works provide much food for thought, for both Hong Kong people and all citizens in the global village.

Tsang Kin-Wah: 29 June - 11 Aug 2006 (PicassoMio Gallery, Madrid)
PICASSOMIO GALLERY, MADRID
|
|||||||||||||||||||
- PicassoMio Gallery

"The State of Things" is rooted in contemporary international design and crafts that pose questions about tradition, taste, and the expectations that are handed down to us. What unites the participating artists is that they haven't contented themselves with standing on the sidelines and complaining about things they don't think are good, but rather have created their own platforms, initiatives, style systems, notions of taste, and meeting places. They are, in other words, actively involved, and create the present in which they themselves want to live. The exhibition presents design and crafts that follow their own paths, but which nonetheless are involved in and have an effect on the general development of the design and crafts of today. Besides designers and those working with crafts, the exhibition also includes artists. For regardless of background, title, and education, they are all engaged and influence and expand our notions of design and crafts. - The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Norway

In this book, we talk about graphics that create relationship with us. It is not only a relationship between audience and the entity, like what we would get from reading a flyer or seeing a poster, but a more intimate relationship with our lives. This relationship encompasses all design disciplines - including graphic design, fashion design, interior design and industrial design, etc. - quoted from Victionary (www.victionary.com)

"Umbrella" : A magazine from South California recently has a review on my book "Interior" |
|||||||||||||||||||
Tsang Kin-wah: Interior (Hong Kong, 2003, $20.00 paper) is a stunning example of a bookwork that has a traditional basis, but is of the 21th century, discussing Image, Text and Foul Language. Here visual poetry takes over in a decorative way even though the words are four-letter and beyond. It becomes wallpaper, it becomes visually exciting, it moves and dances across the page and across the wall. The artist took William Morris as his matrix and creates a decorative visual text which became an installation at the Camberwell College of Arts London Institute, translating it later into a bookwork with discussion of what he did. From a hand silkscreened wallpaper, the book gives closer and closer views of the text, which reveals itself as four-letter words and obscenities. The discussion in the book reveals how the combination of foul language (text) with Morris' floral pattern (image) and arranging the text in the form of flowers and plants, which are swirling and running throughout the space, helps to link up their organic force which undergirds both Nature and humanity. He quotes Hal Foster. "The artist becomes a manipulator of signs more than a producer of art object, and the viewer an active reader of messages rather than a passive contemplator of the aesthetic or consumer of the spectacular." Tsang graduated with an M. A. in Book Arts from Camberwell. This is a stunning work, showing the artist at work knowing his ethnic roots and traditions, the finished installation in the room (a fold-out) and has a biography at the back. - Hoffberg, Judith edited., "Umbrella", Vol. 27, No. 2-3, August 2004, p.66-67.

" ... The end wall of the first gallery is hung with a number of sheets of hand-made wallpaper by Tsang Kin Wah, printed in a repeat pattern reminiscent of William Morris but in rather nasty combination of pink, white, pale blue, and violet. Closer inspection reveals that it is not only the color scheme that is nasty. The whole sheet is overprinted with a diatribe of filthy language. It is not always easy to read - the words all run into one another and the lines are broken in an irregular sequence - yet it is clear enough. The enthusiastic repetition of the word fucking - fucking this, fucking that - every three or four words indicates that this is not your normal innocuous wall paper. Tsang's work is in fact among the strongest in the whole show as it addresses very interesting issues in a highly inventive way. He forces us to think about connections between art and language, between beauty, truth, and reality, and the role of the artist as maker of objects in a post-industrial society. His lively invective has the power to shock but it is not offensive - the shock is more akin to a jolt of recognition that this is powerfully expressive and effective art. ..." - Jonathan Thomson, "The Ordinary and the Extraordinary", Asian Art News, Vol. 14, No. 2, March/April 2004. |
Tsang Kin-wah Synopsis: Interiors takes the room sized installation of patterned text that Tsang Kin-wah created at the Camberwell College of Arts London Institute and turns it into a hand held reading experience. Taking inspiration from the floral wallpaper patterns of William Morris, Tsang Kin-wah covered an entire room in hand silk screened swirling, intricately laid out black and white text. The book zooms in on portions of the pattern, revealing it to be made up entirely of strings of obscenities. Shots of the artist at work and of the finished installation are interspersed throughout the book and are accompanied by an essay from the artist entitled "Image Text and Foul Language."
