Gymnopaedia is a series of videos that contain 3 movements. The title makes a strong reference to ancient Greece’s annual festival, gymnopaedia, where Sparta’s warriors or citizens perform war dancing and choral singing.
Movements No. 1 and 3 are composed using footage of night bombings in Gaza and the Gulf Wars, while Movement No. 2 focuses on footage of Saddam Hussein's execution and the movement of the hanging rope, with two series of rope/text paintings as a complement and additional exploration of the theme and subject. The dots (bombs) and lines (ropes) move and dance slowly in the dark, as if they are fireflies and moons in the sky. The movements of dots and lines create an elegant harmony with the brutality and cruelty of humanity hidden behind the scenes. Movements No. 1 and 2 use Erik Satie’s Gymnopédies as the main soundtrack and music, while the first movement of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata appears in Movement No. 3, Moons & Moonlight.
